Instagram takes aim at AI-generated profiles, limits reach of unlabelled accounts

Instagram is updating its labeling system to explicitly identify 'AI-generated profiles' to improve transparency for users. Platforms like Spotify are also implementing similar measures to ensure users can distinguish between human and AI-created personas.
Why it matters
As AI-generated content proliferates, social media platforms are under pressure to maintain user trust by clearly distinguishing between human and synthetic identities.
Instagram is set to apply AI labels more clearly by changing ‘AI creator’ to ‘AI-generated profile’ in an effort to increase transparency. Users who operate AI-generated avatar profiles must update their labels “appropriately” or else the platform will apply limits in those profiles’ reach.
“This update builds on the learnings of the AI creator label we began testing earlier this year. As generative AI becomes a bigger part of how people create, we’ve heard that people don’t like seeing a profile that seems human, only to find out later that the person featured is AI-generated. They want to know when a profile features an AI-generated person,” Instagram said in a blog.
The Meta-owned social media plarform is not the only one rolling out new labelling rules for AI-generated profiles. Spotify is also working to label ‘AI Personas’ from mid-September.
