Indian photonics industry forms association amid AI boom
The Indian Photonics Association (IPA) has been formed to represent firms in the photonics sector as demand for high-speed data transmission grows due to the AI boom. The association aims to support domestic manufacturing and provide a unified voice for the industry as it aligns with government initiatives like the India Semiconductor Mission.

As AI data centers require massive throughput, photonics has become a critical strategic industry for India's technological infrastructure and manufacturing goals.
A handful of firms in the photonics industry have formed the Indian Photonics Association (IPA), a grouping of firms that work on the technology. The move comes as the Union government also seeks to promote, through the India Semiconductor Mission’s second phase, the domestic manufacture of photonics products like transceivers, which sit at the end of fiber-optic cables, forming a crucial component in telecom networks and AI data centres.
