India summons U.S. Deputy Chief of Mission after second ship attack in three days leaves three Indian sailors missing

India has formally protested to the U.S. government following a military attack on a commercial vessel near Oman that left three Indian sailors missing. This incident marks the second attack on a commercial ship in three days, which India attributes to regional conflict.
Why it matters
The incident highlights escalating tensions in maritime security and the diplomatic strain between India and the U.S. regarding regional military actions.
India on Wednesday (June 10, 2026) summoned the U.S. Embassy’s Deputy Chief of Mission Jason Meeks and lodged a ‘strong protest’ after one more attack on a commercial vessel near the Omani coast left three Indian sailors missing, official sources have confirmed. In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs described the incident as “deeply worrisome” and said it was “a direct result of the ongoing conflict in the region”. Wednesday’s incident involving commercial vessel Settebello that had around 24 Indian crew members onboard was the second such attack in the past three days. The previous attack on M/T Marivex was claimed by the U.S. Central Command that had described the oil tanker as “non-compliant”.
The framing emphasizes the diplomatic protest and the human cost of the conflict, reflecting a critical stance on the U.S. military's regional actions.
