India’s PM Modi expected to visit Canada in December to sign trade deal, envoy says

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit Canada in December to sign a completed trade deal between the two countries, New Delhi’s envoy says – a sign of warmer bilateral relations.

Dinesh Patnaik, India ’s high commissioner to Canada, said in an interview on Tuesday he expects a free-trade agreement under negotiation will be completed by November and that his country’s leader will arrive in Canada the following month to ink the deal.

India, which recently overtook Japan as the world’s fourth-largest economy, represents a significant opportunity for Canada. In 2025, two-way goods and services trade between the countries was worth $30.4-billion.
