India’s plant-protein ingredients market seen doubling to ₹9,000 cr in five years

India's plant-protein ingredients market is projected to double to ₹9,000 crore by 2031, driven by a shift toward nutritional consciousness. Industry experts suggest that increasing domestic manufacturing is essential to reduce the current 90% reliance on imports.
Why it matters
Growth in this sector represents a significant economic opportunity for India to leverage its agricultural base and improve food processing capabilities.
India’s plant-protein ingredients market is expected to double from its current estimated size of ₹4,500 crore over the next five years, driven by rising demand for protein-rich, nutraceutical and functional food products, according to industry estimates.
“India is witnessing a clear shift from calorie-consciousness to nutritional consciousness, with protein emerging as a key driver of food choices,” Praveer Srivastava, Executive Director of the Plant Based Foods Industry Association (PBFIA), said at the Fi India & ProPak India 2026 event in Mumbai.
“The plant-based food sector is growing at about 18% CAGR, significantly faster than the estimated 7–8% global growth rate,” he said, adding at the current pace, the plant-protein ingredients market could expand to roughly ₹9,000 crore by 2031, highlighting the scale of the opportunity for domestic manufacturers.
