Janata Dal (United) national working president Sanjay Jha, who was Bihar’s Minister for Water Resources between 2021 and 2024, has advocated against the renewal of the 1996 India-Bangladesh Ganga Water Treaty, saying it would hurt the interests of Bihar.
The remarks came against the backdrop of the current political tensions between India and Bangladesh, with the two sides yet to hold the last round of talks on the renewal of the treaty that will expire on December 31, 2026.
Speaking to The Hindu , Mr. Jha said, “If you look at the data in the last 30 years of the treaty being in place, you can clearly see that the interests of Bihar have been negatively impacted.”
