‘Imposter’ sent fake police notices seeking to block IFF, SFLC accounts: X tells Delhi High Court
Social media platform X informed the Delhi High Court that fraudulent notices demanding the blocking of IFF and SFLC accounts were sent by an imposter, not the Delhi Police. The court closed the proceedings after X confirmed it had not acted on the fake requests and had reported the incident to authorities.
Why it matters
The case highlights the vulnerability of digital platforms to impersonation attacks and the importance of verifying official communications to protect civil society organizations.
Fraudulent notices purportedly issued by the Delhi Police seeking the blocking of accounts belonging to the Internet Freedom Foundation (IFF) and the Software Freedom Law Centre (SFLC) were sent by an “imposter”, social media platform X told the Delhi High Court on Friday (November 6, 2026). Appearing before Justice Amit Mahajan, X’s counsel said an internal investigation had established that the communications were not genuine police notices. The platform also assured the court that it had not acted on the requests and would not take down the organisations’ accounts.
