A team of officials from the Avadi Municipal Corporation disconnected about 40 illegal sewer connections used to discharge raw sewage into the Thirumullaivoyal Arafath Lake on Thursday.

Restoration work is under way at the lake belonging to the chain of waterbodies in the western parts of Chennai. Sewage pollution is one of the major issues affecting the lake. It was found that residential buildings and industrial units along CTH Road in Manikandapuram and Sudarsanam Nagar were releasing sewage into the lake.

Avadi Municipal Commissioner R. Saranya said a fine up to ₹40,000 had been levied on residential buildings and the major industrial units. Sewage discharge had led to stagnant sewage along CTH Road and posed a public health risk.
