IIT Madras graduates' hostel idea grows into over 1,500 foldable buildings
Modulus Housing, a startup founded by IIT Madras graduates, creates factory-made, foldable buildings to provide rapid infrastructure solutions. The company has deployed over 1,500 units across India and Africa to address housing and facility needs.
Why it matters
Modular and foldable construction technology offers a scalable solution for disaster relief and infrastructure development in underserved regions.
Imagine a school that needs extra classrooms, a clinic waiting for more space, or a remote community that cannot afford to wait months for a building. What if some of these structures could be manufactured in factories, transported to the required location and assembled far more quickly than conventional construction? This is the problem Chennai-based startup Modulus Housing is trying to solve. Founded in 2018 by IIT Madras civil engineering graduates Shreeram Ravichandran and P. Gobinath, the company designs factory-made, foldable and reusable buildings for places where infrastructure is needed but conventional construction can be slow and difficult to coordinate. According to the company and industry reports, it has delivered more than 1,500 buildings across 21 Indian states and parts of Africa. The idea is about more than making buildings that fold.
