IGG orders interdiction of state mining company boss, legal chief over graft probe

Uganda's Inspectorate of Government has ordered the interdiction of the CEO and legal chief of the Uganda National Mining Company amid a corruption investigation. The move is intended to prevent interference with the ongoing probe into financial mismanagement.
Why it matters
The intervention reflects efforts to combat graft within state-owned enterprises and maintain operational integrity in the mining sector.
The Inspectorate of Government has directed the Board Chairperson of the Uganda National Mining Company to immediately interdict its Chief Executive Officer, Dr Gerald Banaga-Baingi, and the Chief Corporate and Legal Affairs Officer, Ms Lelia K. Bwambale, following serious allegations of corruption and administrative misconduct.
In an official statement released on Thursday, October 22, 2026, the anti-graft watchdog explained that the interdiction aims to ensure uninterrupted investigations into claims of maladministration, financial mismanagement, and abuse of office brought against the two senior executives.
To avert an operational crisis at the state-owned enterprise, the Inspectorate instructed the board chairperson to immediately put in place interim management structures to maintain executive functions while investigations proceed.
