A phase 3 clinical trial presented at IDWeek 2026 indicates that the two-drug antiretroviral regimen doravirine/islatravir is as effective as the standard three-drug regimen for treating HIV-1. Patients reported similar health outcomes and symptom reduction across both treatment groups.
Why it matters
This finding is important for HIV treatment options, potentially offering patients simpler medication regimens with comparable efficacy and safety profiles.
Doravirine/islatravir (DOR/ISL) and bictegravir/emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide (BIC/FTC/TAF) are associated with similar improvements in self-reported health status and reductions in bothersome symptoms among previously untreated adults with HIV-1, according to study results presented at IDWeek 2026, held from October 21 to 24, in Washington, DC.
Researchers assessed patient-reported outcomes with DOR/ISL, a novel 2-drug antiretroviral therapy (ART) regimen, compared with BIC/FTC/TAF in a double-blind phase 3 trial (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT05705349 ). The trial previously demonstrated noninferior virologic efficacy and comparable safety between ART regimens at week 48.
