ICTS professor Deepak Dhar awarded prestigious 2026 Dirac Medal

Professor Deepak Dhar of the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences has been awarded the 2026 Dirac Medal for his pioneering work in statistical mechanics. He shares the honor with three other scientists for their contributions to fields including artificial intelligence, neuroscience, and non-equilibrium systems.
Why it matters
The Dirac Medal is a prestigious international recognition in physics, highlighting India's growing influence in theoretical science and complex systems research.
The International Centre for Theoretical Sciences on Monday (August 10, 2026) said that its professor Deepak Dhar has been awarded the prestigious 2026 Dirac Medal, recognising his contributions to statistical mechanics and complex systems.
Prof. Dhar, who is an Indian National Science Academy (INSA) distinguished professor at ICTS, shares the honour with three other stalwarts of statistical mechanics — Bernard Derrida, Marc Mezard and Haim Sompolinsky — the Institute said in a post on its website.
Huge news for ICTS & Indian science! Congrats to Prof. Deepak Dhar on receiving the 2026 ICTP Dirac Medal, alongside B. Derrida, M. Mézard & H. Sompolinsky, for pioneering contributions to statistical mechanics & its extensions to AI, neuroscience & non-equilibrium systems! pic.twitter.com/RuQBqTfXKG
