ICRC president: Met former Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Qatar over hostages
ICRC President Mirjana Spoljaric confirmed she held confidential meetings with former Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh to discuss access to Israeli hostages. She expressed frustration over the lack of progress and the complexity of the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
Why it matters
The ICRC's inability to access hostages remains a critical humanitarian and diplomatic failure in the ongoing Middle East conflict.
International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) President Mirjana Spoljaric said that she met former Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Qatar on two separate occasions with the goal of arranging a visit by the organization to Israeli hostages held in Gaza, making the comment as part of an interview on Saturday with New York Times reporter Lulu Garcia-Navarro."These were tough discussions, and trust me, we are very frank in these meetings," said Spoljaric, noting that she further met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the issue.
