T he mighty Himalayan mountain range is sometimes called “Roof of the World”, as it has some of the tallest mountains on Earth. In India, the Himalayas are also the source of the country’s iconic and culturally important rivers: the Ganga and the Yamuna. Picturesque tourist destinations in this mountain range, such as Shimla, Mussoorie, and Darjeeling, receive visitors from across the country.
The Himalayas stretch across 13 Indian states from Ladakh in the north to Sikkim in the east. The mountains also harbour a variety of habitats, from the icy high-altitude deserts of Ladakh to the conifer forests of Uttarakhand that are home to some special birds found only in these areas.
