Why it matters
The testimony provides a high-profile look into the judicial process regarding political violence and targeted attacks in Uganda.
Public Service Minister Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala on Monday gave a detailed and emotional account of the June 2021 assassination attempt against him, telling the International Crimes Division of the High Court how he watched his daughter die after she cried out “Jesus” as gunmen ambushed his vehicle along Kisota Road.
Testifying before a panel of four judges, Katumba retraced the events of June 1, 2021, when he left his home in Najjera, Wakiso District, at about 8:30 a.m. for Najjanankumbi to make burial arrangements for his late mother-in-law.
He told the court that after briefly stopping to buy newspapers, his convoy proceeded onto Kisota Road, where the attack began moments later.
“We stopped by a newspaper and then we joined Kisota Road. We drove for a very short time, I think less than 10 minutes,” Katumba testified.
He said the first sounds caught him by surprise.
