A hyena at the Thiruvananthapuram Zoo has given birth to two cubs, prompting officials to quarantine the mother and offspring for monitoring. The zoo recently acquired the hyenas as part of an animal exchange program with Shivamogga Zoological Park.

A hyena gave birth to two cubs at the Thiruvananthapuram Zoo, the officials said on Sunday (September 20, 2026).
Zoo wardens noticed the mother Hyena nursing the pups last week. They moved the male Hyena to another enclosure and quarantined the mother and the cubs for close monitoring.
The zoo had sourced three Hyenas, two jackals, two marsh crocodiles, and two palm civets from Shivamogga Zoological Park in Karnataka in 2024.
In exchange, the Zoo authorities gave four rheas, six sun conures, two gharials, one hyena and two Indian crested porcupines to the Shivamogga Zoological Park.
