Hundreds march in separate rallies against CEC Gyanesh Kumar in Kolkata

Hundreds took part in two different protests in Kolkata on Friday (September 25, 2026), demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar and the initiation of legal proceedings against him over alleged irregularities in connection with the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the country.

The separate rallies were organised by the Congress party and the Left-affiliated women’s rights group, All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA). Protesters in the Congress rally burned an effigy of the CEC. During the AIDWA rally, which started from the Esplanade area, protesters marched towards the West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer’s (CEO’s) office to demand the reinstatement of what they alleged were names "wrongfully” deleted under SIR.
