How to use your M-Pesa app without buying data bundles, Safaricom explains
Safaricom has clarified that users can access the M-Pesa app without consuming mobile data bundles, provided the app is activated and necessary permissions are granted. The service works over any internet connection, including Wi-Fi, as long as the user's SIM card remains in the device.

Safaricom has said customers can use the M-Pesa app without consuming their mobile data bundles, provided the application has been properly activated and the required permissions granted.
The clarification came on Monday, October 5, 2026, after X user Tony Olaka questioned a notification displayed on the M-Pesa app stating: “This app will not use any of your data bundles.”
Olaka sought to establish whether the change meant customers would no longer need to buy mobile data bundles when accessing M-Pesa services, including when paying for services such as home internet.
Responding through its customer care account, Safaricom confirmed that use of the M-Pesa app would not consume customers’ data bundles.
“Hi Tony Olaka, thanks for reaching out. It means that the App will not consume Data Bundles,” Safaricom Care said.
