How the 15-minute city can shape India’s next housing boom

The '15-minute city' urban planning concept is being proposed as a solution to manage India's rapid urbanization and housing growth. By integrating essential services like schools and healthcare into residential hubs, planners aim to reduce commute times and improve quality of life.
Why it matters
It offers a strategic framework for sustainable urban development in rapidly growing economies facing significant infrastructure challenges.
A weekday morning in any of India’s major cities has its own rhythm. School drop-offs are planned around traffic, office departures around peak hours, and social plans are often shaped by the time it takes to move across the city. Over time, these everyday considerations have begun to influence where people choose to live and what they increasingly expect from a good location.
Metro networks are also expanding rapidly, improving mobility and opening new corridors for development.
At the same time, the geography of work is becoming more distributed. Bengaluru now has major employment centres across Whitefield, the Outer Ring Road, Electronic City and North Bengaluru. Hyderabad has expanded towards the Financial District and newer western corridors. Delhi NCR spans multiple business centres across Delhi, Gurugram and Noida, while Mumbai continues to grow across BKC, the western suburbs, Thane and Navi Mumbai.
