Why it matters
Eala is a prominent young athlete representing the Philippines on the international stage, and her performance highlights the competitive landscape of Asian tennis.
Alex Eala's Asian Games campaign came to a grinding halt on Thursday afternoon.
The Filipina star was the top seed in the singles event and looked to be well on her way to securing victory in her semi-final match when she snatched the opening set from Chinese player Xiyu Wang.
It was not to be for the 21-year-old , who eventually lost 6-3, 3-6, 2-6 at Higashiyama Park Tennis Center in Nagoya, Japan.
Eala has also exited the doubles event , meaning her 2026 Asian Games campaign has concluded.
Eala achieved a similar result at the prestigious event four years ago.
Eala, then 17 years old, began her 2022 Asian Games campaign in emphatic fashion, defeating Pakistani player Sarah Mahboob Khan 6-0, 6-0 at the Hangzhou Olympic Expo Center in China.
The youngster's excellent form continued in the next round, as she defeated India's Rutuja Bhosale 7-6, 6-2.
