The Guardian reports that Donald Trump allegedly directed $20 million in taxpayer funds toward political advertising promoting his presidency. Critics have labeled the campaign, which includes ads aired on national television, as illegal government propaganda.
Why it matters
This raises significant ethical and legal questions regarding the misuse of public funds for partisan political campaigning in the United States.
Donald Trump personally directed the use of $20m in taxpayer funds to purchase advertising time on national television to air a series of political ads that celebrate his presidency in the run-up to the midterm elections, the New York Times reported on Friday.
The campaign, which has featured four pro-Trump ads so far, has been called illegal government propaganda by critics.
“The money for the ads was freed up on Sept. 19, when the Office of Management and Budget shifted $20 million in Customs and Border Protection funds to a budget category called One Big Beautiful Bill Commemorative Events,” the Times reported, citing anonymous sources familiar with the spending.
