HMWSSB launches rainwater harvesting initiative in Malkajgiri to enhance groundwater levels
The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board is installing rainwater harvesting structures in Malkajgiri to improve groundwater levels. Additionally, the board has begun enforcing water conservation laws by fining residents for the misuse of drinking water.

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) on Friday launched a special initiative in the Malkajgiri region to boost groundwater levels.
As part of it, recharge pits are being constructed around dried-up borewells to channel rainwater collected from nearby rooftops directly into the ground using the injection method.
In Malkajgiri, a total of 181 borewells were identified for the program and so far, 53 have been converted into recharge structures. Officials said work is underway at another 62 borewells, and the remaining 66 are yet to be taken up.
As per the plan, the target was to set up 50 recharge pits per circle, and till date about 60 have been set up. Director (Operations) Vasa Satyanarayana stated that these model structures have been implemented in areas such as Hastinapuram, Hanuman Nagar, Agriculture Colony, Self-Finance Colony, Swaroop Nagar, and Indraprastha Colony.
