Hippo calf born at Bannerughatta Biological Park
A new hippopotamus calf was born at the Bannerughatta Biological Park on May 27, bringing the park's total population to five. The mother and calf are currently under observation and are now available for public viewing.
Why it matters
The birth of a healthy calf is a positive indicator for captive breeding programs and wildlife conservation efforts within regional biological parks.
The hippopotamus population at the Bannerughatta Biological Park (BBP) has increased to five with the birth of a hippopotamus calf.
BBP officials said Dashya, aged around 17 years, gave birth to a hippopotamus calf on May 27.
“Since birth, both mother and calf have been under continuous observation by the animal care team. Considering the importance of the early post-parturition period, the enclosure is being managed with minimum disturbance to provide a calm environment for the animals. Measures have been taken to reduce stress and support natural maternal behaviour, thereby promoting the healthy growth and development of the calf,” officials said.
