Why it matters
The incident reflects the ongoing political and ideological tensions in India regarding freedom of speech and public figures.
High drama unfolded outside the Karnatak Vidyavardhak Sangha in Dharwad on Sunday when a group of Hindutva activists, including some BJP members, made an attempt to gherao actor-turned-activist Prakash Raj who was supposed to speak at a programme there.
He was in the city to attend the programme scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
As he arrived at the venue, some activists raised slogans against him accusing him of being anti-Hindu and anti-Dharmasthala.
However, some police personnel on duty immediately intervened and dispersed the protesters. They also took some of them into preventive custody and released them later.
