As thousands of Namibians prepare to take to the roads for the festive season, authorities are moving to put more eyes on motorists, with new traffic cameras being activated to detect speeding, negligent driving and road incidents.

Minister of Works and Transport Veikko Nekundi made the announcement in a ministerial response delivered in Parliament last week, where he outlined measures being taken to strengthen traffic surveillance and enforcement ahead of the busy travel period.

“Some cameras mounted between Arandis and Swakopmund and between Arandis and Usakos, on the initial stretch of about 40 kilometres, are already functional as far as traffic surveillance is concerned,” Nekundi said.

He said the cameras form part of a wider surveillance system covering the 140-kilometre corridor, which is managed centrally by the Arandis Emergency Response Centre Traffic Management Centre.

“The remainder will be functional by the end of November 2026,” he said.
