Here are the big stories from Karnataka today
Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has ordered an inquiry into police conduct during recent protests against electoral roll revisions. Meanwhile, the state government is navigating legal challenges regarding reservation policies for SC/ST communities.
Why it matters
The intersection of police accountability and reservation policy highlights the complex governance challenges currently facing the Karnataka state administration.
Karnataka Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar said he had taken note of police action against protesters and members of the media on Monday (October 12, 2026), and had sought a full report on the circumstances that led to the police action. “If there has been any unnecessary use of force or excess, accountability will follow,” he said.
This comes a day after Bengaluru police detained over a 100 persons for trying to march to the office of Chief Electoral Officer, Karnataka to protest against the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Police manhandled journalists and photographers, apart from protesters, on a day when Mr. Shivakumar was participating in a protest rally against SIR in New Delhi, drawing much ire.
