Henry Wooster approved as new US envoy to Kenya

The US Senate has confirmed Henry Wooster as the new ambassador to Kenya, ending a two-year vacancy in the diplomatic post. Wooster emphasized that the US remains neutral regarding the 2027 Kenyan elections, focusing instead on regional stability and the prevention of political violence.
Why it matters
The appointment is significant for US-Kenya relations as the country prepares for a high-stakes election cycle amid concerns over potential civil unrest.
US Ambassador-designate to Kenya Henry Wooster/FILE The United States Senate on Thursday approved Henry Wooster as Washington’s next envoy in Nairobi, filling the top diplomatic post that has remained vacant for almost two years.
Wooster’s confirmation comes just in time as the election year is getting underway, with campaigns already intensifying. But the veteran diplomat already said Washington does not intend to take sides in the contest.
A diplomatic source informed the Star that the ambassador will likely arrive in Nairobi mid-November or early December.
During his confirmation hearing before the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Wooster said the American focus would be on ensuring a peaceful and stable electoral process rather than supporting any candidate, party or political camp.
“We are not picking sides in the election, A or B or any other party. What we are looking for is stability, i.e., no violence,” Wooster told senators.
