Heavy rain hits Kerala’s Malappuram, relief camps opened
Heavy monsoon rains in Kerala's Malappuram district have forced the opening of relief camps and the closure of educational institutions. Local authorities are managing emergency operations, though a tragic drowning incident has been reported.

Four relief camps were opened in the district as heavy rain continued on Saturday (August 1, 2026). Seventy people from 13 families were shifted to safer locations.
The camps are functioning at Valiyattiparamba Anganwadi at Manjeri, Cherumann Anganwadi at Edavanna, Ma’dinul Uloom Madrasa at Panakkad and Government Welfare Upper Primary School at Nediyiruppu. Those shifted include 24 men, 22 women, 20 children, and four elderly persons.
A review meeting chaired by District Collector Vinay Goyal assessed the rain situation and instructed departments to complete emergency preparations. The Collector directed officials to ensure basic facilities at the camps.
People living in vulnerable areas have been advised to move to safer places. Residents near rivers, streams and other water bodies have been asked to remain alert and avoid entering water bodies for fishing or bathing.
