Heavy rain batters Kerala’s Wayanad, forcing evacuations
Wayanad district in Kerala is facing severe flooding and landslips due to heavy monsoon rains, leading to the opening of 15 relief camps. Authorities have restricted travel on the Thamarassery Ghat road and declared holidays for educational institutions.

Heavy rains wreaked havoc in Wayanad district, with several areas facing the threat of flooding and landslips. With the southwest monsoon gaining strength over the past two days, the district administration on Saturday opened relief camps and relocated people from vulnerable areas.
A landslip damaged a house at Chekkanni Kattunaikka Unnathi (tribal settlement). No one was injured in the incident. Nine people from three families in the settlement were shifted to a relief camp following the incident.
As of late evening, 15 relief camps were opened across the district. Officials said a total of 461 people from 169 families in Vythiri, Mananthavady and Sulthan Bathery taluks had been shifted to the camps.
District Collector D.R. Meghashree has urged the public to exercise caution and avoid non-essential travel via the Thamarassery Ghat road.
