Heart Awareness Month South Africa: What to know this September

The Heart and Stroke Foundation South Africa is launching its annual Heart Awareness Month campaign throughout September to address the high prevalence of cardiovascular disease. The initiative will focus on different cardiac conditions each week, emphasizing the importance of early detection and prevention.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death globally, and public health campaigns are critical for reducing mortality rates through education and screening.
September will once again put heart health in the spotlight as the Heart and Stroke Foundation South Africa (HSFSA) leads the country’s annual Heart Awareness Month campaign.
The campaign runs throughout September before culminating in World Heart Day on 29 September , with a focus on the growing burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and the steps people can take to understand and reduce their risk.
According to the Foundation, cardiovascular disease remains the world’s leading cause of death, claiming about 20 million lives globally each year and accounting for roughly 33% of deaths worldwide.
In South Africa, hypertensive disease, ischaemic heart disease and other forms of heart disease together accounted for about 10.9% of all deaths. The Foundation also estimates that 10 people in South Africa suffer a heart attack every hour .
