Haryana CM downplays speculation over renewal of SAD-BJP alliance

Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has downplayed rumors of a renewed alliance between the BJP and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. He emphasized that recent meetings between party leaders and the Prime Minister should not be interpreted through a political lens.
Why it matters
The potential revival of this historic alliance could significantly alter the political landscape of Punjab and the electoral prospects of the BJP in the state.
The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) alliance is with the people of Punjab, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini said on Monday (August 10, 2026), adding that a meeting with the Prime Minister did not have to be seen “through a political lens”.
Mr. Saini was replying to a question on the possibility of the BJP forming an alliance again with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) in the upcoming 2027 Punjab Assembly election, following a meeting last week between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal in New Delhi.
