Group Condemns Prolonged Aba Blackout, Calls For End To Electricity Monopoly, Urgent Govt Intervention

According to FENRAD, the blackout began at about 6:30 p.m. on Friday, July 31, following a disruption in natural gas supply to the 188-megawatt Geometric Power Plant located in the Osisioma Industrial Layout.
The Foundation for Environmental Rights, Advocacy and Development (FENRAD) has condemned the prolonged power outage affecting residents and businesses across the Aba Ring-Fence Area of Abia State, describing the situation as evidence of the dangers posed by a monopolistic electricity market that leaves consumers without alternatives during major disruptions.
In a statement issued by its Executive Director, Nelson Nnanna Nwafor, the group urged relevant authorities and operators to immediately restore electricity to the affected communities while calling for sweeping reforms to dismantle monopoly tendencies within the Aba electricity market.
