Greg O'Connor elected unopposed as new Wellington councillor
Former Labour MP Greg O'Connor has been elected unopposed as the new councillor for the Takapū/Northern ward in Wellington. He replaces the late Tony Randle and will be sworn in on October 22.
Why it matters
The appointment fills a critical vacancy in local government, ensuring continued representation for the northern suburbs of Wellington.
Former Labour MP Greg O'Connor is elected unopposed as the new Takapū/Northern ward councillor of the Wellington City Council.
The former assistant speaker, who bowed out from Parliament with his Ōhariu electorate dissolved by boundary changes, will replace Tony Randle, who died in August.
O'Connor was the only candidate when nominations for the resulting by-election close midday on Thursday. He will be sworn in at a council meeting on Thursday, October 22.
Mayor Andrew Little said he looked forward to welcoming O'Connor as a new councillor.
