Greetings from a Syrian church, infused with a mix of sweet fruit and diverse faiths

A travelogue piece describes a visit to the historic Deir Mar Musa monastery in Syria, highlighting its interfaith mission and the author's personal reflection on the site. The narrative weaves together cultural observations and the monastery's unique religious history.
Why it matters
It provides a humanizing perspective on Syrian cultural heritage and interfaith dialogue amidst a region defined by conflict.
Emily Feng/NPR I had wanted to visit the monastery of Deir Mar Musa, about 60 miles north of Damascus, for a while. Its incredible restoration under a charismatic Italian priest , his tragic disappearance and presumed death during the Syrian civil war, and the inspiring interfaith work of the monastery's remaining monks and nuns all fascinated me.
The piece is a personal essay/travelogue and does not engage in political or social advocacy.
