A donated heart harvested from a 23-year-old accident victim in Madurai was transported by road to Perambalur through a coordinated green corridor, helping save the life of a 43-year-old patient from Puducherry.
The victim, a native of Sivaganga district, sustained serious injuries in a road accident and was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Madurai. He was subsequently declared brain dead. Following the consent of his family, his heart, kidneys, liver and other vital organs were donated for transplantation.
The donated heart was found suitable for a 43-year-old recipient from Puducherry, who had been undergoing treatment at Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Medical College Hospital in Perambalur. The heart began its journey from Madurai at 10.28 a.m. and reached the hospital at 12.22 p.m., covering the 178-km distance in just one hour and 54 minutes.
