Govt gives NARO, Soroti University Shs7.7b to boost women’s agribusiness

The Ugandan government, in partnership with the World Bank, has allocated Shs7.7 billion to NARO and Soroti University to support women-led agribusinesses. The funding will establish value-addition facilities to help women process farm crops and increase their income.
Why it matters
This initiative directly supports economic development and gender equality in the Teso sub-region by providing infrastructure for small-scale agricultural entrepreneurs.
The government has allocated Shs7.7 billion to the National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO) and Soroti University to establish facilities aimed at helping women add value to agricultural products and develop agribusinesses in the Teso sub-region.
The funding is being provided under the Growth Opportunities and Productivity for Women Enterprises (GROW) project, which is funded by the Ugandan government and the World Bank.
Enoch Mutambi, a Skills Development Specialist with the GROW project, said Shs3.5 billion had been allocated to Soroti University to establish a value-addition facility, while Shs4.2 billion had been allocated to NARO for similar activities.
Mr Mutambi said locating the facilities within public institutions was intended to ensure they remained accessible to women rather than operate primarily for profit.
