The government has deployed 21 electric buses in Kira Municipality, Wakiso District, as part of efforts to modernise public transport, reduce traffic congestion and provide commuters with an alternative to old taxis.

The introduction of Kayoola electric buses comes at a time when authorities are intensifying enforcement against public service vehicles in Dangerous Mechanical Condition (DMCs), a crackdown that has seen several commuter taxis taken off the road.

Ms Minsa Kabanda, the Minister of Kampala and Metropolitan Affairs, who officiated at the Friday launch, said the initiative is in line with government’s plan to establish a modern and efficient transport system in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area (GKMA).

“It is aligned with the vision of a modern, integrated and efficient transport system for the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area as envisaged under the GKMA Multi-Modal Urban Transport Masterplan,” she said.
