Why it matters
This underscores the political importance of caste-based reservation policies in Indian local governance.
Minister of Transport Mandipalli Ramprasad Reddy asserted that 34 per cent reservation for the Backward Classes is the target, and stated that social justice is the government’s policy and that it is committed to political representation for backward classes.
Speaking to the media at Rayachoti in Annamayya district on Saturday (October 3, 2026), the Minister said the government is taking steps to provide 34 per cent reservation to BCs in all local bodies, to ensure justice for weaker sections. He said the State government had also issued G.O. Numbers 105 and 1065 in this direction and was working on a commitment for political representation to BCs.
Mr. Ramprasad Reddy alleged that the Opposition leaders were creating hurdles and conspiring to deny reservation to BCs, besides trying to scuttle the election process for the local bodies. The government would use every legal opportunity to ensure justice, he said.
