Government launches five-year data strategy ahead of AI adoption

The Ugandan government has launched a five-year National Data Strategy to standardize data collection and storage across public institutions. This initiative aims to improve public service delivery and provide a reliable data foundation for future artificial intelligence deployment.
Why it matters
Standardizing government data is a critical prerequisite for the ethical and effective implementation of AI in public sector planning and infrastructure development.
The Ministry of ICT and National Guidance has launched a five-year National Data Strategy designed to overhaul how government institutions collect, store, and share information, laying the groundwork for Uganda’s upcoming National AI Strategy.
The new roadmap seeks to eliminate fragmented data systems, curb wasteful duplication, and enhance the quality of information used for public sector planning and service delivery across the country. Speaking at the launch, Dr Aminah Zawedde, the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, emphasized that dependable and accessible data is essential for informed decision-making and the ethical deployment of emerging technologies.
“Artificial intelligence depends on the quality of the data used to develop and operate it. Getting data governance and responsible use right will help Uganda make better use of these technologies,” Dr Zawedde said.
