Government delivers update on second Auckland Harbour crossing progress
The New Zealand Government announced an independent business case will be conducted for Auckland's second harbour crossing, led by a globally sourced expert who will report directly to ministers. This decision comes despite an NZTA investment case endorsing a tunnel and includes a study of the Meola Reef option, which has previously been discounted.

The Government says an independent business case will be conducted to inform what option is chosen for Auckland’s second harbour crossing.
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Transport Minister Chris Bishop have confirmed the Government will search worldwide for the person to lead the business case, who will answer to ministers instead of the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA).
Cabinet has also agreed to commission a study of the Meola Reef option, strongly supported by Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown.
A statement from Bishop noted the study could be commissioned “if the [Auckland] Council is interested” while also pointing to “many” reviews of the Meola Reef option, which he said has been discounted as “unachievable”.
