Why it matters
The agreement underscores the increasing reliance of large-scale AI and data infrastructure on stable, low-carbon nuclear energy sources.
--> Google has signed a 22-year agreement with Finnish energy company Fortum to purchase 507 MW of nuclear power from the Loviisa Nuclear Power Plant. This is the country’s first power purchase agreement for electricity from nuclear generation, OilPrice reports, citing Rystad Energy.
According to the publication, this is the largest single PPA signed in Finland. The Loviisa Nuclear Power Plant supplies about 10% of the country’s electricity consumption. As Rystad Energy notes, the 22-year contract term is intended to prevent the plant from being decommissioned in 2030.
Rystad Energy forecasts that installed data center capacity in Finland will grow from 0.8 GW in 2026 to 5 GW in 2035. By 2030, data centers could consume about 15% of all electricity in the country and become the main source of new demand.
