Google Maps changed its default voice to be more 'natural.' People hate it

Google Maps has changed its default voice for directions — you know, the one that tells you where to turn and how many kilometres until the off-ramp — and it's safe to say many people are not fans of the new mouthpiece directing them from Point A to Point B.
"Why does my Google Maps default voice suddenly sound like a Mid-Western white woman?" someone wrote on X on Friday .
"The vocal fry kills me," a person commented on Reddit .
"I want directions to my next business meeting, not an effing latte," someone said in the Google Maps support forum .
In a statement to CBC News, Google explained the new voice started rolling out earlier this year as part of its ongoing updates to improve the driving experience and make voice guidance more natural with help from Gemini models.
