Goods train derails near Kovvur, several trains held up

A goods train derailment near Kovvur station has caused significant disruptions to rail traffic across the Vijayawada-Visakhapatnam section. Restoration efforts are underway, though several passenger trains have been delayed or cancelled.
Why it matters
Railway infrastructure failures impact thousands of commuters and the logistics of essential goods, highlighting the need for maintenance and safety protocols.
Rail traffic across the Vijayawada-Visakhapatnam section was severely crippled on Thursday (September 11, 2026) following the derailment of a goods train carrying fertiliser near Kovvur Railway Station in East Godavari district.
Eight wagons of the freight rake, which was en route to Vijayawada, veered off the tracks on the main line. The incident blocked the arterial route, throwing long-distance and commuter services into disarray across the South Central Railway (SCR) and East Coast Railway zones.
Commuters faced immense hardship as multiple premier and express services were detained at various stations en route. The Visakhapatnam-Secunderabad Vande Bharat Express, which arrived at Platform 2 of Kovvur station at approximately 9:15 AM, was held up indefinitely.
