‘Good meeting’: Godongwana optimistic on Joburg governance prospects after talks with Morero

After six months of escalating tensions over governance, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana and his team at National Treasury met with City of Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero on Tuesday, with both parties describing the meeting regarding the city’s fiscal position as “good” and “productive”.
In February, News24 reported that Godongwana called for national government intervention in Johannesburg’s financial crisis. In May, it emerged that the Treasury threatened to cut funding over what Godongwana termed an illegal R10 billion wage agreement between the city and the South African Municipal Workers’ Union.
“You are hereby directed to stop proceeding with the implementation of this illegally signed agreement that has the potential to destroy the sustainability of the City of Johannesburg,” Godongwana said in a missive to Morero on 23 April.
