Go on a journey to the headwaters of the Manimala river

Local historian Pallikkonam Rajeev is leading a two-day heritage tour to explore the headwaters of the Manimala river in Kerala. The initiative aims to educate participants on the river's geography, cultural history, and the communities it sustains.
Why it matters
Heritage tourism initiatives like this foster a deeper connection between local communities and their environmental history, promoting sustainable cultural engagement.
The best way to get to know a river is to journey to its source, says local historian and cultural heritage activist Pallikkonam Rajeev. It reveals the geography of the river, the cultures it nourishes and life it sustains. “Understanding a river opens a window to our own multiple histories as a people,” he adds.
A heritage tour initiative headed by Rajeev, ‘Roots & Roads’, is organising a journey to the headwaters of the Manimala river. It intends to take participants through the tributaries, streams and waterfalls of the Pullakkayar, considered the childhood (a more pristine form) of the Manimala river.
