Glasgow City Council letting staff down with fire and rehire plans, worker says

A council worker has accused Glasgow City Council of letting staff down after it announced fire and rehire plans due to a stalemate over equal pay proposals.

The council has threatened to sack more than 23,000 members of staff and then rehire them on new contracts after negotiations broke down with unions.

The talks were about the council's plans to replace a pay system found to discriminate against mostly women workers. The changes would see the majority of staff unaffected or better off but they would cut pay for 11% of staff.

Speaking on the BBC's Radio Scotland Breakfast one worker described the situation as "heart breaking".
