Gilad Erdan, Ayelet Shaked step away from election race
Former Israeli officials Gilad Erdan and Ayelet Shaked have withdrawn their Unity Party from the upcoming election. They cited a lack of public interest in a broad unity government and the difficulty of meeting the electoral threshold.
Why it matters
The withdrawal reflects the current political climate in Israel, where voters are prioritizing the selection of a prime minister over coalition-building efforts.
Former Israeli ambassador to the UN Gilad Erdan and former justice minister Ayelet Shaked announced Sunday that they will not run in the upcoming election, citing the political reality and the difficulty of advancing their vision for a broad unity government.Erdan, chairman of the Unity Party, said he decided to withdraw the party from the race after concluding that it was unlikely to cross the electoral threshold and that efforts to merge with other parties had not succeeded.“Throughout my life, I have served the people of Israel and the State of Israel,” Erdan said.
