Millions of Australian smartphones have sounded the first test of the nation's new emergency warning system.

Devices across the country formed part of the nationwide emergency alert system test, notifying users simultaneously.

AusAlert is the federal government's new national warning system, and despite concerns at a state and territory level, it is set to launch in October.

But first, the system needed to be tested across Australia.
