Germany maybe found a new source of renewable energy
Researchers in Germany are exploring geothermal energy as a replacement for the Weisweiler lignite-fired power plant, which is scheduled to close in 2029. Exploratory wells have been drilled to test the feasibility of using deep geothermal reservoirs to supply heat to the city of Aachen.
Why it matters
This project represents a critical step in the 'Strukturwandel' or industrial transformation of coal-dependent regions toward renewable energy sources.
