In a historic step toward deepening continental cooperation, the Federal Republic of Germany and the African Union (AU) have officially launched their first-ever strategic dialogue on foreign and security policy at the AU Headquarters in Addis Ababa.
The milestone consultations, held during an official visit on July 13 and 14, 2026, were led by German Federal Foreign Office State Secretary Dr. Géza Andreas von Geyr and AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Bankole Adeoye. The meeting establishes a comprehensive new framework designed to jointly address complex global security crises and strengthen multilateral collaboration.
The formal architecture for this dialogue was originally agreed upon in January 2026 by Foreign Minister Wadephul and AU Chairperson Youssouf in Addis Ababa, before receiving final endorsement from German Federal Chancellor Merz and Chairperson Youssouf during their high-level summit in Berlin in April 2026.
